At Notre Dame, I aim to find opportunities that deepen my learning and allow me to engage with important causes. This summer, I hit my mark. I was fortunate enough to intern for Polo for the Cure, an event that combines sportsmanship with philanthropy, raising funds for Susan G. Komen Italia in the fight against breast cancer. Alongside my fellow intern, Claire Coffey, we were selected through the Global Professional Experience program, and this opportunity has been nothing short of transformative.

The lush green fields contrast beautifully with the blue sky at the picturesque Acquedotto Romano Polo Club in Rome, where the event took place. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the energy and excitement in the air. Over 500 attendees, including celebrities, dignitaries and polo aficionados, gathered for the third edition of “Polo for the Cure.” This year’s event promised not just thrilling matches but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with entertainment, gourmet food and camaraderie.

One of the highlights was the ceremonial ball toss, which was officiated by none other than Joe Donnelly, former senator and current U.S. ambassador to the Holy See. His presence added a special touch to the event, embodying the spirit of community and support for the cause we were championing. Watching him toss the first ball was exhilarating; it marked the official beginning of an event dedicated to a cause so important to so many.

The day began with an all-ladies polo tournament, showcasing some of the most talented female players in the sport. As Claire and I moved through the event, we observed how the excitement built with each match. Each polo team played not just for victory but also for the mission at hand — raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and support.

Behind the scenes, we worked diligently to assist with various logistical aspects of the event. From coordinating with volunteers to managing the auction, every task was an opportunity to learn and grow. Claire and I embraced every moment, fueled by the passion of the event’s organizers, Marco and Flaminia Elser. Their dedication to the breast cancer organization, Komen Italia, was palpable, and their enthusiasm motivated us to give our best.

Sport, culture and charity all blended together. The atmosphere was vibrant, with food trucks offering a variety of culinary delights, from pastrami sandwiches to delicious Neapolitan pizza. DJ sets and live music kept the crowd energized, and a VIP catwalk showcased the elegance and style of the attendees. It felt as if we were part of something larger — a community coming together to support a vital cause.

As the day progressed, I found myself reflecting on why events like these are so important. Breast cancer affects millions of people worldwide, and initiatives like Polo for the Cure play a critical role in funding research and providing support to those affected. Seeing the dedication of everyone involved, from the players to the volunteers, reinforced my belief in the power of community-driven initiatives.

As we wrapped up the day, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. The experience was not just an internship; it was an opportunity to be part of something meaningful, to learn from inspiring leaders, and to contribute to a cause that affects so many. I returned to Notre Dame with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the impact we can make when we come together.

I am truly grateful to Notre Dame for the incredible opportunities afforded to me through the Global Professional Experience program. Participating in Polo for the Cure has been a highlight of my journey, embodying the values of compassion, teamwork and community support that are so central to our mission. I carry these lessons with me as I continue my journey at Notre Dame and beyond, and I’m excited to see how they shape my future.
