AI at ND

Author: Athene Mares

AI has become more advanced and more prevalent in our day-to-day lives, so it’s only fair that Notre Dame’s AI policy has adapted with it. For instance, a new set of guidelines was released in August that details the restrictions on unauthorized electronic devices, including wearables like smart glasses, during assessments.

While Notre Dame realizes that AI will become a pivotal part of our future and careers, many professors have made the decision to completely ban their students from using AI to maintain academic honesty and allow students to develop their critical skills. Students are not permitted to use AI to complete coursework unless their professor has specifically allowed them to do so. Ultimately, Notre Dame’s professors have authority to make their own decisions regarding AI in their classes, so this may differ from course to course. Grammar-checking platforms like Grammarly, have also been prohibited by various professors due to these editing tools now providing AI-generated suggestions that can create a potential academic misconduct through plagiarism.

AI can instead be used for a variety of other purposes including the creation of study guides, explanation of difficult concepts or to generate practice problems — but remember to verify and double check what it tells you! Notre Dame provides Google Gemini or Google Notebook through your ND account with the same level of security and privacy as your email account. It will not use your data to train their models and is therefore safe to use.
