Brian Kelly’s head coaching winning percentage, which places him 16th among active NCAA Division-I coaches. His overall record is 230-88-2 through stints with Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame. Just one year removed from a 2015 campaign, in which his team went 10-3 and was a contender for a playoff spot, Kelly finds himself on the hot seat. His 2016 team, ranked as high as 9th in the nation in preseason polls, finished 4-8 and failed to reach a bowl game.

Number of Division-I football head coaching jobs currently available: Oregon, Baylor, Purdue and Houston. Experts predict coaching changes may occur at UCLA and Texas A&M, among others, so more spots could open up in the near future. Despite Kelly’s insistence that he will remain head coach for the Irish and athletic director Jack Swarbrick’s midseason declaration that Kelly will be at the helm for the start of 2017 season, multiple reports suggest Kelly’s representatives may be exploring other job options in the NCAA and NFL. Kelly has no previous NFL experience.

Final ranking the Irish received from CBS Sports following their loss to USC on November 26 (out of 128 NCAA Division-I teams). Of the teams on Notre Dame’s 2016 schedule, the Irish finished with a ranking higher than only four: Duke and Michigan State, both of whom beat the Irish; and Syracuse and Nevada, who Notre Dame beat this season.

Overall prospect ranking of Notre Dame redshirt sophomore quarterback DeShone Kizer. According to CBS Sports, Kizer is projected to be a first-round draft pick and ranks below only North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson at the quarterback position.
